In recent years, the global business environment has increasingly emphasized sustainabilityand collaboration, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In Romania, where SMEs form a significant part of the economy, the need for SustainableAlliance Managers (SAMs) has become essential. SAMs foster partnerships that drive business success while ensuring environmental sustainability. The SAMExperience project aims to develop a hybrid competency framework, integrating collaborative and green skills tailored for Romanian SMEs. This article explores the initiative’s importance and its potentialimpact on Romania’s business landscape.

SMEs play a critical role in Romania’s economy, accounting for over 99% of businesses and employing around 66% of the workforce. However, these enterprises face challenges such aslimited resources and a lack of knowledge about sustainable practices. As the demand for sustainability grows, SMEs must adapt to stay competitive.

SAMs manage partnerships focused on sustainability, helping SMEs collaborate with stakeholders to meet shared goals. In Romania, SMEs often struggle with regulations and market dynamics, making SAMs crucial in navigating these issues. A competency framework can empower SAMs to drive effective partnerships and positive change.

The SAMExperience project seeks to develop a hybrid framework combining key skills like communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and a deep understanding of sustainabilityprinciples and green technologies. SAMs must take an interdisciplinary approach, drawingfrom business, environmental science, engineering, and social sciences to create holisticsolutions.

Collaboration is key for the successful implementation of the framework, involving SMEs, educational institutions, industry associations, and policymakers. Business leaders must invest in SAM training, universities should align curricula with the framework, and associations can guide SMEs through sustainable collaborations. Policymakers can encouragesustainability through supportive regulations, financial incentives, and raising awarenessabout the benefits of collaboration.

Despite the opportunities, challenges remain, such as a lack of awareness among SMEsregarding the advantages of sustainability. The SAMExperience project addresses this by providing resources and training to help SMEs realize the long-term benefits.

The SAMExperience project plays a crucial role in helping Romanian SMEs embracesustainability and collaboration. By equipping SAMs with the necessary skills, the project contributes to innovation, value creation, and the sustainable development of Romania’seconomy. As SMEs face 21st-century challenges, skilled SAMs will be vital in positioning Romanian businesses as leaders in sustainable practices, benefiting both the economy and society.
